Wedding

Livret famille

Wedding location

Domicile or residence place

The marriage is celebrated in the town where one of the future spouses has his domicile or residence established for at least one month of continuous habitation at the date of the publication of banns.

  • If the marriage is celebrated in the town where one of the spouses is domiciled, no minimum period of residence or the actual dwelling in that place is required.
  • If the marriage is celebrated in the town where one of the spouses has just a residence, it is necessary that this residence is characterized by a continuous habitation. In this case, the groom must remain there during the month preceding the date of the release was posted. Residence should be uninterrupted or intermittent.

The registrar will ensure that the groom has lasting links with the town and can provide proof of address in his district juridiction.

Celebration place

Marriage must be celebrated at the town council. However, there are exceptions :

  • In case of serious impediment, the prosecutor may ask the registrar to move home or residence of a party to celebrate the wedding.
  • In cases of imminent danger of death of one of the spouses, the registar  can move to the home or residence of one of the parties before any requisition or consent of the public prosecutor.
  • The celebration outside the town council is mentioned in the marriage certificate.

Paperwork before marriage

Documents required

  • 1 ID
  • 1 proof of address or residence of each spouse,
  • Information relating to witnesses (names, date and place of birth, occupation and address)
  • 1 full copy of the birth certificate :
    • less than 3 months, if the birth took place in France,
    • less than 6 months for those born abroad.
  • If a period of more than 3 months (or 6 months) takes place between the back and the marriage, it will once again provide recent birth certificates.
  • If the bride and groom entered into a marriage contract: notary certificate
  • For foreigners: specific parts can be requested according to each nationality (ask at the town council or Consulate).

The documents are to be submitted to the registrar called to celebrate the marriage.
Note : In some special family circumstances (widowhood, marriage of a minor ...), additional documents may be requested

Preliminary hearing

The registrar interviews the grooms together. This hearing is mandatory. It may, exceptionally, do not take place when there is impossibility to carry out or when, reading from the file, it does not seem necessary.

In some cases, the registar may, if it seems necessary, ask to speak separately with either of the grooms.

When one of the grooms lives abroad, the registar may ask the diplomatic or consular authority having territorial jurisdiction to conduct the hearing.

Banns

The banns must be published at the town hall of the home (s) of the grooms for a period of 10 days. For "serious reasons", the prosecutor may waive this publication.

The publication of banns is to publicize the display wedding plans at the gates of the town hall. It will set out the names, surnames, professions, homes or residences of the grooms, and the place where the wedding will be celebrated.

The marriage can be celebrated 10 days after the publication of banns in the town hall. Marriage can not be celebrated before the 11th day. In any case, it should be celebrated in the year following the expiration of the period of 10 days.
